This event is organised within the framework of the European Week of Regions and Cities. This year’s edition will spread over three consecutive weeks in October, each dedicated to one timely topic:

  • 5-9 October: Empowering Citizens,
  • 12-16 October: Cohesion and cooperation,
  • 19-22 October: Green Europe, in cooperation with the Green Week.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the related health and safety measures, the majority of the 500 sessions will be in fully held online – including this one.

Topic

Particular attention is paid by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU Article 174) to “regions which suffer from severe and permanent natural or demographic handicaps” such as mountains, islands and northernmost sparsely populated areas. Island, mountain and sparsely populated regions of the EU cover around 43% of the EU territory, nearly 30% of the EU population and 25% of the EU27 GDP. The EU’s objective is to support their development, maximise their strengths, gain actual access to development opportunities on an equal basis with other territories while ensuring they contribute to the overall sustainable development of the European Union. The workshop will be looking at development opportunities for these areas under the post-2020 Cohesion Policy and in particular how Cohesion Policy in the new programming period can respond to climate change (related to issues of the Green Deal), the coronavirus crisis and effects on the local economies of islands, mountainous and sparsely-populated areas that are strongly dependant on tourism.

Details on speakers will follow soon on the session’s webpage.
