“Cohesion for growth – mountains as natural ingredients for Europe’s competitiveness?”

In 2006 the European Mountain Convention is concentrating on making the case for territorial cohesion as a contributor
to the European growth agenda. One of the advantages of Europe in a globalising world is diversity, which exists in abundance in the mountain areas. Mountain areas also have a specific contribution to make to the European population
in terms of public goods that also drive the economy. The comparative advantages of mountains, sensitively developed, can also contribute significantly to European growth. Finally, mountain areas are calling for European border areas,
islands and other extreme rural areas to come together in defence of the founding pillar of European integration,
cohesion.
