The European Rural Parliament is a long-term campaign to express the voice of rural people in Europe; and to promote self-help and action by the rural people, in partnership with civil society and governments. The campaign reaches a climax every two years with a gathering of rural people from all parts of the wider Europe. Between the gatherings we co-operate across Europe to identify and report key rural issues and implement the recommendations of the biennial gathering.

Topic

In 2019, READER, the Asturian Rural Development Network and their partners will host the 4th European Rural Parliament, in Asturias in Spain, in association with the Spanish Network for Rural Development.

The special theme for this 2019 edition will be the rural-urban interface, which is an increasingly key topic for rural development.

Euromontana’s workshop

During the 2019 edition of the ERP, Euromontana will lead a workshop on “How to govern smart in mountain areas?“. Through the introduction of examples of innovation governance in mountain areas and collective discussions, the workshop will aim at identifying governance models answering mountains’ specific needs. The workshop will be led by Laura Gascón Herrero, European project officer in Provincial Government of Teruel and member of Euromontana Board of Directors, and Blandine Camus, Communication & Policy Officer at Euromontana.

SIMRA’s workshop

The Horizon 2020 project SIMRA – of which Euromontana is a partner – will also participate to the European Rural Parliament by highlighting the potential of social innovation in a workshop on how to connect with the “hard-to-reach” in rural areas. The objective will be to discuss how to reach out to various rural population groups who are not well-represented at the European level or who feel left behind by policymakers, such as youth, refugees, remote communities, Roma, women, etc. The good practices collected by SIMRA will serve as a basis to think of solutions to adapt EU policymaking to the diversity of communities and their needs in rural areas as well as show the benefits of connecting with/engaging such groups for the society as a whole. Bill Slee, researcher at the James Hutton Institute, and Lauren Mosdale, Project Officer at Euromontana, both involved in the SIMRA project, will run the workshop.

Programme and logistic

The 4th European Rural Parliament will take place 6-9 November 2019, in the village of Candás in the region of Cabo Peñas.

The programme is available here. Registrations are closing on September 30, register on the event’s webpage!

🧊 Glaciers matter for water, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond. This is what we are highlighting this year on 11 December, International Mountain Day.Every year, this day provides an opportunity to emphasise the crucial importance of these areas in terms of natural resources, biodiversity, identity, cultural heritage, ways of life, and more resilient models. However, all of this is under threat from climate change, poorly targeted funding and negative perceptions of pastoral professions.Today, we are putting the spotlight on these endangered ice giants throughout our mountain ranges!Did you know that: 💧The Alps alone provide 40% of Europe's fresh water?💡Glacier retreat will reduce hydroelectric energy production by an average of 10% in the Alps and by up to 35% by 2070 compared to today?🌱68% of irrigated agricultural land in the plains depends directly on water runoff from the mountains? ⛰️By 2034 the Pyrenees will be ice-free?📢An appropriate governance of glacier is needed to counteract the rapid changes!🧊 By signing the manifesto for better European governance of glaciers alongside 80 other organisations, we are calling for immediate and targeted political responses to the economic, social and environmental impacts of climate change.Have a look 👉 www.euromontana.org/european-manifesto-for-a-governance-of-glaciers-and-connected-resources/ #IMD2025 #InternationalMountainDay #MountainsMatterMountain Partnership ...
