On 1st and 2nd October 2019, the EMbleMatiC project is organising the international conference “EMbleMatiC ecojourneys : developing alternative sustainable tourism in Mediteranean hinterland areas”.

Topic

EMbleMatiC is an European cooperation project, which has been implemented since 2016 in the framework of the INTERREG MED Programme and gathers 9 Mediterranean mountains and one university. The aim is to develop a new tourism offer in coastal hinterland areas through the creation of 9 eco-itineraries, based on the same values, criteria and sustainable attributes.

Within plenaries sessions and workshops, the event will answer the following questions: What are the current challenges in terms of sustainable tourism for Mediterranean hinterland areas? How can we find a balance between tourism development and preservation of environment? What are the specificities of hinterland in Mediterranean areas? The conference will therefore be the opportunity to learn from peers, facing similar challenges, but also to share your views and good practices on sustainable tourism.

Who should participate?

All stakeholders participating in the definition and the implementation of sustainable tourism policies/projects are invited to join the event, including: – local authorities (technical staff) involved in sustainable tourism projects or strategies local or regional levels – elected representatives/decision-makers from local authorities – managers from tourism NGO/organisations: tourism office – national or European network of mountains, of Mediterranean areas – sustainable tourism experts – European representatives: European commission, Member of the European Parliament.

Programme and logistic

Please consult the entire programme for the two days. Before making your registration for the event, please read the logistic note.

Booking your accommodation and transfer bus to venue:  Anogia was chosen to host the conference, that is to say in the hinterland rural area, with an altitude of 900 m, where the project has created a new form of tourism by implementing an eco-itinerary: you will have a chance to experience it by yourself during the field trip of Tuesday 1/10 before enjoying the conference the following day in the Delina Mountain Resort in Anogia.

The chosen location of Anogia presents some limits in term of hosting capacity, therefore  participants will stay over two locations: Anogia and Heraklion by providing all related services for making your participation to the conference and your stay in Crete as convenient as possible.

Encouragement to offset your your carbon footprint: the EMbleMatiC final conference endeavours to be a green event. In line with this philosophy, you are encouraged to make your own participation as greener as possible by, for instance, ofsetting your travel emissions. We couldn’t enjoy the wonderful venue of Crete without means of transport such as airplane or ship. However, they are responsible of large GHG emmissions worldwide and, therefore, they contribute to global warming in critical manner. For this reason, you are encouraged you to offset those GHG emissions that you generate while traveling to Anogia.

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed! We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. He stressed that :1️⃣ mountains are not Europe’s margins, but diverse and complex living territories, and 2️⃣ stronger place-based policies and European cooperation are needed to move from recognition to implementation. Thanks again for the organization, the opportunity, and to all the participants 👏 ...
