The Association of Chambers of Agriculture of the Pyrenees (ACAP) – a member of Euromontana – is organising a seminar on pastoral lands with the aim of recalling their contribution to socio-economic and environmental issues, especially in the context of the post-2020 CAP.

Topic

In France, the areas always covered by grass, which represent 1/3 of the French UAA, cover nearly 10 million hectares, including 2.2 million pastoral lands.

As diverse in nature as the agricultural practices that make use of them, pastoral lands are made up of moors, woods, rangelands or any other environment that combines herbaceous and ligneous fodder resources. Poorly known and long regarded as ungrateful, these lands have traditionally been used by professional livestock farmers, who are essential economic actors, and today they are highly valued for the services they provide to society: quality food production, dynamic economic sectors, cultural and tourism heritage, beautiful landscapes, carbon storage, biodiversity reservoirs, fire and avalanche prevention, erosion control, groundwater recharge, climate change mitigation, etc.

Since 2015, France and the European Union have recognised the economic and environmental benefits of these areas by making them eligible for surface aid under the CAP.

With the shared objective of consolidating this recognition in future agricultural policies, the mountain and disadvantaged areas networks of the FNSEA, Young Farmers and Chambers of Agriculture are organising a seminar on 1 and 2 October in Ax-les-Thermes in the Pyrenees. Combining plenary sessions and field visits, this seminar aims to

  • raising awareness of the contributions of pastoralism to social issues
  • ensuring the recognition of the economic, environmental and social importance of pastoral lands in the CAP
  • maintaining the eligibility of pastoral areas for CAP surface-based aid while taking into account their heterogeneity

Programme and registration

You will find on the ACAP website, in French, the programme of the event as well as the registration form and logistics information on how to get there.
