Move on Green

Why the MOG project?

Sustainable transport is vital

  • to maintaining the environmental and economic health of rural areas,
  • to ensuring the access of both inhabitants and potential visitors to key services such as employment, education and healthcare.

Since the population densities of regions participating in MOG are all under the EU average and indeed many are classed as demographic deserts, all experiences and policies implemented to make sustainable transport feasible in these areas will be of immense importance for the partners and for any rural and mountain areas of Europe.

The role of policies

Rural areas policy-makers are aware that the absence of sustainable mobility schemes affects any development strategy implemented in rural territories. No matter how much effort is spent on education, promotion of tourism, development of new economic initiatives, etc.: sustainable transport pattern (from the environmental, social and economic perspectives) is one of the key success for development initiative. In many of the partner regions, depopulation has been severe for many years. Decision makers from mountain and rural areas acknowledge the role they must play and are ready to learn about new solutions and to take action. Interesting solutions for mobility have already been developed. They will be exchanged through MOG and implemented in the partner regions.

The objectives of Move on Green

Move on Green will improve the design and effectiveness of regional policies on sustainable transport in rural and mountain areas. Doing so, MOG will contribute to:

  • Reduce emissions and waste and minimise the impact on both the environment and local landscapes.
  • Allow the basic needs of both individuals and society to be met safely and in a manner consistent with human and ecosystem health.
  • Support competitive economy options as well as balanced development in rural areas.
  • Offer a number of transport alternatives which are affordable and operate efficiently.

To do so, during 3 years from 2012 to 2014, the project will organize exchanges of experiences on sustainable mobility between the 13 partners involved. Based on the examples analysed, each regional partner will afterwards prepare an action plan on sustainable transport to implement locally.

MOG is co-financed by the ERDF and by the INTERREG IVC programme

The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.
