Seminar on Successful Territorial Marketing in Mountain Areas

24-25 May 2011 in Trysil, Norway

Venue: Radisson Hotel, Trysil

Languages: English, Norwegian

There is a common agreement among stakeholders that in order to improve the attractiveness and the living conditions of one area, employment and education opportunities are essential, but not the only ones. In the context of globalisation and a dynamic world, each territory has to work on the image and strengths it communicates to the outside. For some municipalities, there is a need for restoring the messages transferred and for others to update those to what the society looks for. Other municipalities need to build-up a positive image of the area in order to restore pride and identity in the local community, to attract back the people who just left and are still connected in one way or another or to attract finally totally new migrants looking for a different lifestyle or may be tourists and business.

Content of the seminar

Within the PADIMA project, 8 partners from 5 European countries are engaged in a survey on the current situation regarding policies and trends of depopulation in mountain areas. Through the survey, they also identify the challenges, needs and prospects they face and highlight their contributions to successful development of their mountain areas.

PADIMA partners have been looking specifically at successful initiatives of activating one territory’s image. The main aim of the seminar is to communicate these good practices and to debate on their interest and transferability to other regions.

Dalarna Council (Sweden) and Hedmark Council (Norway), for example, put the regions’ territorial image in the focus when developing policies to fight depopulation. They developed initiatives that were supported by local and regional authorities like advertising campaigns or phone call campaigns aiming at targeting those people who originate from the area but had left etc.

Massif Central, France, has worked on some employment related initiatives like developing special assistance to new migrants who want to start a business in mountain areas via training courses and administrative assistance before departure, or attending job fairs with a collection of job offers available right away to the candidates who would have the required skills and be ready to move to the area.

The seminar will be attended by approximately 80 participants. The discussions will contribute to a better understanding of mountain areas’ needs and opportunities in term of territorial marketing.

A collection of good practices identified in the partner regions is currently undergoing and will be shared with seminar participants.

The input from participants is expected to bring up new ideas and recommendations. Therefore, room for debates is foreseen, and the issue of transferability of some good practices selected in partner regions that could be implemented in other mountain areas will be discussed.
