Quel avenir pour le pastoralisme en Europe ? La cohabitation avec les grands carnivores et l’attractivité des métiers pastoraux en question

Atelier de discussion pour les membres d’Euromontana 7 mars 2018 – Moûtiers (France)

Le pastoralisme est une activité traditionnelle d’élevage extensive, pratiquée en particulier  dans les zones de montagne. Cette forme d’élevage permet la mise en valeur de territoires à faible valeur agronomique, difficiles d’accès ou non-mécanisables, et ainsi de maintenir une activité économique dans ces zones. Le pastoralisme a aussi comme intérêt de maintenir des paysages ouverts, jouant ainsi un rôle à la fois pour le développement du tourisme et pour favoriser la biodiversité, et de prévenir les catastrophes naturelles. Cependant, la poursuite de l’activité pastorale est menacée par des difficultés de plusieurs ordres : difficultés liées au contexte économique, difficultés pour trouver des terrains suffisants pour maintenir les troupeaux, difficultés à organiser efficacement et durablement le pâturage des troupeaux dans le contexte d’un usage saisonnier du territoire avec des enjeux environnementaux forts et une pression exercée par les autres utilisateurs des pâturages.

Parmi les nombreux défis que doit relever le pastoralisme dans les montagnes européennes, cet atelier de discussion en a abordé deux à savoir la cohabitation avec les grands carnivores et le maintien de l’attractivité des métiers pastoraux.

Bien que les positions individuelles ne soient pas toujours convergentes, cet atelier a permis des échanges, une écoute et un dialogue sereins parmi des membres venant de 11 pays et représentant différents types d’organisations (chercheurs, agriculteurs, agences environnementales et de développement régional, régions).

And that's a wrap for the first Euromontana Board of Directors meeting of the year 🇮🇹 Last week, the Board members examined the development of the network and reported on ongoing activities and plans for the coming months, as well as the network's advocacy priorities! 🏔️ The day also included a tour of the Università della Montagna premises, (who are kindly hosting the meetings) and meeting with Luca Masneri, the Mayor of the Commune of Edolo. 🇮🇹 Live from Edolo were Euromontana's Board of Directors is gathering for its first meeting of the year!Yesterday, the group reached the 3,000 m to witness the impact of climate change on tourism and on the Presena glacier, explained by Consortia Pontedilegno-Tonale, and then learned about the alteration of the alpine ecosystem from Stelvio National Park and Adamello Regional Park🏔👉Fauna, flora and local communities are affected by the shorter period of snow cover, which disturbs the habitats and physiological clocks of species, as well as the availability of water, predation cycles and the cultural landscape. Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed!We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion.
