Mountains for Europe‘s Future, an event to put mountains on the agenda of Horizon 2020

Mountains for Europe's Future_logoAs part of the initiative ‘Mountains for Europe’s Future: Putting Mountains on the Agenda of Horizon 2020’, the CH-AT Alliance organised a conference in Brussels on Monday 25 April 2016.

The initiative gathers researchers from all over Europe who are involved in scientific projects dealing with mountain areas. It aims to promote the inclusion of topics specific to mountain in future Funding Programmes and particularly in Horizon 2020 Work Programmes 2018–2020. One of the outcomes of the initiative has been the release of a Strategic Research Agenda, which was officially launched at Brussels’ event. To access the document, please click here.

The conference was the opportunity for researchers, policy-makers and other mountain stakeholders to meet to discuss the role of mountains as territories of innovation. Viktor Blaskov, parliamentary assistant of the MEP Iotova whom the own initiative report “cohesion policy in mountainous regions of the European Union” was recently adopted, opened the event. In his speech, he highlighted the successful collaboration between Euromontana and the MEP for the writing of the report. To read the speech of Viktor Blaskov, please click here.

During the panel discussion, Marie Clotteau, director of Euromontana, stressed that:

“Added value and the potential for creativity, innovation and research of mountain areas are often under‐recognised and underexploited. But if we want to achieve the ambitious objectives of the EU 2020 strategy, we need to mobilise all the territories and to recognise mountain areas as development and innovation poles. Innovations developed in mountains can be a source of inspiration and solutions for the rest of Europe.”
