Romania has established a national logo for the optional quality term ”Mountain Product”

On February 5th 2019, Romania announced the creation of a specific logo for the quality term “mountain product” in the Official Journal of Romania. The Order of the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development no. 49 of January 14th, 2019 is amending and completing the annex of the 52/2017 order on the approval of the Conformity assessment procedure of the data entered in the tender book for the granting of the right to use the optional quality term “mountain product” and the assessment of compliance with the national and European legislation for the producers that have been granted the right to use the aforementioned quality term. This new Order has established the national logo for the optional quality term “mountain product”.

 

The National Mountain Area Agency has been designated as the competent authority in charge of the assessment of the data entered in the tender book for the granting of the right to use the optional quality term “mountain product”. This institution, subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has among its attributions the elaboration of the conformity assessment procedure of the data entered in the tender book for the granting of the right to use the optional quality term “mountain product” and the assessment of compliance with the national and European legislation for the producers that have been granted the right to use the respective quality term. The Agency also manages recordings in the National registry of the mountain products and ensures its publicity.

 

There are currently 24 producers from mountain areas who have been granted the right to use the optional quality term ”mountain product” in Romania, on a total of 80 products.

 

Euromontana is working to promote a European approach to the protection, promotion and development of mountain quality food products and is promoting a specific labelling of mountain products. On 13th September, 2012, rewarding 12 years of Euromontana commitment to the issue, the European Parliament officially approved a new regulation reserving the use of the term “mountain product” to food products produced and processed in mountain areas (regulation (EU) No 1151/2012). This regulation entered into force in December 2012 and it was supplemented by the Delegated Act (EU) No 665/2014 approved in July 2014, which specifies the conditions of use of the optional quality term ‘mountain product’.
