The “Red Cantabra de Desarollo Rural” (Rural Development network of the Cantabria Region), in Spain, is an association aiming at enhancing initiatives that can improve the development of the region. In the framework of its programme “Dinamización del Uso Público de la Red de Espacios Naturales Protegidos de Cantabria ‘Naturea Cantabria'” (revitalization of the public use of protected Natural Areas network ‘Naturea Cantabria’), this association organises activities such as hikes or boat trips, to maintain and enhance the natural spaces and rural areas in the Region.
Due to the absence of public transport or of individual car, many people who wished to participate in the programme activities couldn’t go to the meeting point.
Thus, after estimating the feasibility of sharing cars between the members, “Red Cantabra de Desarollo Rural” created an ICT platform online, directly integrated in its website. The system connects people who subscribe for the same itinerary, and enable them to share cars and costs.
When a user wants to book online one of the activities of Natura Cantabria, (s)he can see at first glance, from the home page itself and for each of the route, if tickets are available, if car seats are offered and their price.
Sharing cars in Cantabria is also a way to increase the participation to programme activities.
