Pitmain farm is located in the Cairngorms National Park of the Scottish Highlands. The farm is in the Monadhliath Mountains and close to the Spey river. Apart from its farming activities, Pitmain’s farmland provides beneficial habitat areas for birds.
Using the Rural Development Programme (RDP) support from agri-environment payments, a wide mix of management actions have been carried out on the farm:
- Different actions have been developed for flood management related to the Spey river.
- Grass rows in the border of the fields have been installed like a proper environment for beetles.
- Fencing has been installed to manage grazing pressures and also to keep livestock away in the time when birds are nesting.
- A pond has also been created for the birds.
These actions have contributed to a bird friendly environment in an area which many tourists are attracted by bird watching activities. This way, the farm also contributed to the local environment, landscape and economy.
