Between depopulation and massification: how to promote sustainable development in the mountains?

Some mountain regions are facing a combination of two challenges; on the one hand depopulation and lack of attractiveness to live and work in the territory all year long, and on the other hand a tourism outreach that attracts a large mass of visitors in season.

On the 6th May 2021 the online event “Mountain regions: between depopulation and massification” was organised by Diplocat – a public-private consortium promoting the activities carried out by the Catalonia region. The Occitanie region (France), Val d’Aran (Spain) and the Alpine cantons of Switzerland presented the solutions implemented in their territories to face these challenges.

From year-round tourism to investments in connectivity and infrastructure, this article looks at the sustainable development strategies deployed in these three regions. Read the article (for members only).
