Cooperation and development of mountain areas: strengthen the opportunities for Crete

The Region of Crete held on 20 January 2021 a successful webinar with almost 40 local stakeholders to discuss the opportunities and development prospects of Crete’s mountain areas. The initiative organised by George Alexakis, Vice Governor of Crete on International & European Affairs and Vice President of Euromontana, was taken in the context of the region’s participation in Euromontana network.

Mr George Alexakisopened the webinar by stressing the need of a Regional Strategy especially for the mountain areas of the island.

Marie Clotteau, Director of Euromontana and also speaker to the webinar, encouraged participants to support sustainable development in mountain areas, especially as a possible way to recover after the covid-19 crisis and shared their experience by joining the European network.

After a short presentation of Euromontana and its objectives, the floor was given to local actors in order to express their opinion on the future prospects of Crete’s mountain areas, as these areas face almost the same challenges.

Strengthening the cooperation between local stakeholders and also with European networks, the exchange of good practices and public access to them, the dissemination of knowledge and technology were a few of the conclusions of the webinar to fight depopulation in these territories and promote sustainability.

This webinar was attended by interested parties from a broad variety of sectors including mayors of municipalities, regional counsellors, the president of AREPO network and representatives of local development agencies and management bodies of the island protected areas, chambers, geoparks, museums, universities and other actors.
