Discover the vibrant mountainous town of Røros, Norway

On June 20, 2019, members of the Euromontana Board of Directors participated to several study visits in Røros, Norway and discovered the many faces of sustainable local development in the mountain area. Located in the Trøndelag County, in the middle of Norway, Røros is a small town of 5.600 inhabitants with a long tradition in mining recognised by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre already in 1980.

From cultural and natural heritage to traditional gastronomy and local companies, there are many opportunities to improve the quality of life of local communities and enhance the attractivity of the region among tourists in Røros. Various study visits in Røros and its surroundings allowed members of the Board of Directors to learn more about the area before enjoying fruitful discussion during the Board meeting. These study visits were made possible thanks to the Hedmark County Council, and specifically Torunn Kornstad and Arnfinn Nergård, as well as the Eastern Norway Research Institute and the Buskerud County Council.

The study trip was also an excellent opportunity to better understand the Norwegian context and to build on common challenges to strengthen the links between EU and non-EU countries. With inspiring examples of sustainable development of mountain areas, Norway is a great example of the diversity of Euromontana’s members across Europe and of the various exchange opportunities within the network.
