EIP-AGRI Call for interest: show how mountain farming can be carbon neutral

The European Innovation Partnership for Agriculture (EIP-AGRI) is organising a one-and-a-half-day workshop “Towards carbon neutral agriculture” on 09 and 10 September 2020 in Tallinn, Estonia. In view of the event, the EIP-AGRI is looking for farmers and other participants with experience in designing and/or implementing farming systems or practices contributing to reducing the carbon footprint of the European agricultural sector.

Topic of the workshop

The topic of the workshop is highly relevant to the main political priorities of the Commission and in particular the European Green Deal initiative aiming at climate neutrality by 2050.

The focus of this workshop will be on the transition to carbon neutrality in agriculture, through:

  • Soil, crop and livestock management practices that keep and increase carbon in soils.
  • Farm management practices, such as mixed farming, agro-forestry, agro-ecology and organic farming that promote the diversification of farming systems and that bring other environmental benefits, such as increased biodiversity, both in the short and long term.
  • Livestock production that minimises carbon or methane emissions (e.g. extensive systems, manure management).
  • Resource efficiency in agriculture, in particular in relation to the use of fertilisers, plant protection products, energy and other farm inputs (e.g. fuel consumption). Methods and tools to assess carbon emissions and sequestering at farm level.

Considering the high nature value of mountain farming, including livestock farming, agro-forestry and pastoralism, mountain farmers are very much in line with the topic and can share inspiring models and practices to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture.

Who should participate?

Participants will include farmers and farmers’ organisations, foresters, researchers, EIP-AGRI Operational Groups, SMEs, advisers, universities, research and technology organisations, rural networks, and anyone who may be involved in relevant projects or has experience with designing and/or implementing innovative solutions, farming systems or practices contributing to the reduction of carbon footprint of the agricultural sector across Europe.

As a general rule, one participant per project/organisation will be accepted. However, the participation of farmers is strongly encouraged, and a second participant per organisation/project can be exceptionally accepted if at least one of them is a farmer.

How to apply?

To participate to the workshop and share your experience in carbon neutral mountain farming, please apply by filling the EIP-AGRI application form. The deadline was extended to April, 20, 2020 at 23:59 CET. If you have any further questions, please contact workshop@eip-agri.eu

Organisers will assess all applications received and will confirm the attendance of those who will be selected by end of April.

If required, the European Commission may cover travel and accommodation (hotel) costs for those participants who are selected.
