Enhancing the cultural heritage of mountain areas: a new booklet of good practices

Inspired by the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the Schignano Workshop (Province of Como, Italy) and from the XI European Mountain Convention, ERSAF (the Lombardy regional body for agricultural and forestry services) published a collection of good practices coming not only from Lombardy, Italy, but also from the rest of Europe, dedicated to the enhancement of tangible and intangible cultural heritage of mountain areas.

Thanks to the collaboration of Euromontana and its Italian members, as well as Mountain Communities and Ecomuseums of Lombardy, this booklet collects innovative methods and processes through which cultural heritage, a strategic resource inherited from the past, can become a key element for sustainable development and future attractiveness of the mountains and can help strengthen communities by enhancing the sense of belonging and identity.

From the role of transhumant shepherds for the management and conservation of the landscape to the artistic forms of contemporary representation of cultural heritage, from the enhancement of Alpine food heritage to the revival of small local production chains, and from the transmission of cultural heritage to new mountain inhabitants to the links between urban and rural populations and between young and old: ERSAF wishes that the repertoire of these initiatives will suggest ideas and invitations to develop and adapt with creativity the good practices presented, giving them life in other mountain areas that face common challenges, to create a European network that makes the mountains even more alive.
