Euromontana reaffirms the role of mountains to achieve the UN’s SDGs

The United Nations Economic and Social Council will hold its 2020 High-level Political Forum on July 7, around the theme “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. The event will include a three-day ministerial meeting to discuss the achievements of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Euromontana – as a consultative NGO within the UN’s Economic and Social Council – contributed to the upcoming debate. In a written statement, the European Association of Mountain Areas reaffirms the potential of mountain territories and their populations to be real testbeds to make the post-2020 period a real decade for action towards sustainable development.

Euromontana recalled the great contribution of mountain areas in achieving the SDGs, through sustainable food and energy production, sustainable communities implementing social innovations and smart governance models, the provision of clean water and ecosystem services and the protection of biodiversity, among others.
