FIRE-RES: new mountain project on extreme wildfires in mountains!

In December 2021, Euromontana will start working on FIRE-RES: a new European-funded project on extreme wildfire events in mountainous and forest areas of Europe and beyond.

Heat waves and wildfires events will be increasingly widespread in the forthcoming future due to climate change. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, in 2021 the number of fire events in Europe largely exceeded the average in previous years. Emblematic examples are the wildfires in Greece and Italy this summer in Europe, or in Canada this year.

What is the objective of FIRE-RES?

Funded by Horizon 2020, the FIRE-RES project aims to provide the European Union with the capacity to avoid collapsing in front of extreme wildfire events. To this end, over a 4-years period, the project will develop multiple innovation actions and 11 Living Labs to foster the socio-technological transition and implement a holistic and integrated fire management strategy.  The Living Labs will be located in different parts of Europe (including the North, Central and Southern Europe) as well as one case study in Southern America, and act as demonstration sites of FIRE-RES innovations.

Who is behind FIRE-RES?

The project will be coordinated by the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia and it reunites a partnership of 35 key players, selected among academic and research actors, private stakeholders, associations and networks. Euromontana will lead the communication and dissemination strategy of the project.
