Future EU budget announcements to come next week!

The European commissioner for budget and human resources, Günther Oettinger, will be announcing key figures for each of the main areas of the post-2020 budget on 2 May 2018. Details on the proposed spending in each sector will come in the following weeks.

  • May 2: Proposals on the Multi-Annual Financial Framework and Own Resources.
  • 29 May: Sectoral Proposals for Regional and Cohesion Policy, Agriculture, Environment and Climate Action, Economic and Monetary Union Programs.
  • 6 June: Sectoral Proposals for Research and Innovation, European Strategic Investment and the Single Market Program.
  • 12 June: Sectoral proposals for migration, border management and security, the European Defence Fund and the Neighbourhood Policy.

The Common Agricultural Policy makes up some 40 percent of the EU’s budget and currently amounts to €59 billion per year. Commissioner Günther Oettinger has already alluded several times to a future cut in the CAP budget especially in the context of Brexit and the subsequent budget reduction. So, May 29th will be an important day for EU farming and rural development, including in mountain areas.

The European Commission aims to finalise the next MFF before the election of the European Parliament in May 2019. Delays are to be expected.
