Romania celebrates the “National Mountain Day” each September 14, which marks the traditional date of the end of grazing in the Romanian Carpathians. The date was established by the Governmental Decision No 715/2002.
Under the motto “Mountains matter! Keep the mountains clean”, between September 14 and 17, 2022, took place the second edition of the national greening and awareness raising actions aimed at mountains and their inhabitants.
Also, this year’s event was held under the auspices of the “International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, 2022” – proclaimed on December 16, 2021 by the United Nations’ General Assembly.
In this context, the National Agency of Mountain Areas initiated a series of greening and awareness raising actions, in partnership with municipalities and local councils, with the support of Prefectures and County Councils, but also with other decentralised public institutions and services in the mountains. A series of educational activities were also carried out in schools, scientific symposiums in some universities and research institutes – all with the purpose of drawing attention to the role and importance of mountain ecosystems, the potential of natural heritage, and the protection of mountains’ environment, and the preservation of local traditions and crafts.
Many participants joined these actions, of all ages and from both rural and urban areas in the mountain counties of Suceava, Sibiu, Mehedinți, Maramureș, Cluj, Neamț, Alba, Hunedoara, Vâlcea, Argeș, Vrancea.
