The Restructuring of the Wood Sector in Europe: Towards a Green Economy

On 25th March 2014, Euromontana attended the final conference of the project “Wood2Good”, entitled “The Restructuring of the Wood Sector in Europe: Towards a Green Economy“. Wood2Good is a one year project, funded by the PROGRESS programme. It aims at facilitating the understanding of the employment situation in the wood sector, enlightening the role of different stakeholders. It also aims at anticipating changes in this industry, taking into account its relation with climate change and looking at potential impacts on the structure of employment or on interactions between stakeholders.

The conference highlighted the renewable and sustainable character of wood based products which are better than others for many usages. In particular, speakers stressed the key role timber plays in the construction sector: wood constructions involve indeed a lower use of energy and generate less carbon emissions. For these reasons, the demand of wood is currently growing (especially in Asia and North America) so it is necessary to make sure there are enough resources.

This point of view merges with the conclusions of Euromontana’s report on “The utilisation of mountain wood and the organisation of mountain wood industries” which demonstrated the potential of mountain forests and timber industries to deliver sustainably and meet increasing market demands. In connection with the necessity to ensure that resources remain sufficient in a situation of increasing demand for timber, Euromontana’s report contained several examples of solutions implemented in the mountainous areas of Europe to more effectively utilise and exploit the wood from mountain forests.
