On 17th July 2014, the European Affairs daily newspaper, Europolitics, has published an article in which Thomas Egger from SAB (Switzerland Association for Mountain Regions), board member of Euromontana was interviewed on the Alpine Strategy Consultation.
The European Commission has opened a public consultation on the future EU strategy for the Alpine Region (see Euromontana’s news here ). This strategy involves seven countries and 48 regions and has defined three main axes: fostering sustainable growth and promoting innovation, ensuring accessibility and connectivity for all, ensuring sustainability for the Alpine Region.
Thomas Egger, expert of the Alps, explained why this Alpine Strategy could be an asset. Indeed, a bottom-up approach used in this strategy, involving directly the regions, and the economic focus on accessibility, connectivity and competitiveness are two key elements, missing in the Alpine Convention (which is only environmental-oriented). With the current difficulties encountered in agriculture, tourism and the industrial sector, he added that the Alpine economy should probably move from a production economy to a knowledge economy, increasing the know-how of mountain people.
