Tolmin: “Alpine town of the year 2016”

By receiving the title of “Alpine town of the year 2016”, Tolmin (Slovenia) joined a respected community of 17 title holders and became the third Slovenian town holding this title (after Maribor in 2000 and Idrija in 2011). The “Alpine town of the year” award is rewarding one town/municipality that excels in an exemplary implementation of sustainable policies.

The Municipality of Tolmin, with little over 11 thousand inhabitants and little less than 400 km2, lies at the foothills of Julian Alps, which form South-Eastern part of the Alpine arch. High mountains with green pastures at the Northern rim and the river Soča are two most notable features that shape not only the landscape but also everyday life of the locals. Tolmin is part of the Soča Valley Development Centre, one of the members of Euromontana.

Combining traditional knowledge, awareness about turbulent past through a common social responsibility and care about nature and landscape protection, Tolmin paves its way toward green development and prosperity. In the coming year, the Municipality of Tolmin wishes to present the attributes that are making it worthy of the “Alpine Town of the Year” title. Tolmin has chosen to focus on three core topics: young people and their future in the Alps, sustainable mobility and tourism and one umbrella theme that covers all those three mentioned above: green economies and social responsibility.
