Wifi4EU web portal is now open: municipalities can register

The European Commission has recently launched the Wifi4EU web portal, where municipalities or association of municipalities from across Europe can register to receive financing for the installation of free wireless internet hotspots.

The Wifi4EU initiative, launched by the European Commission in November 2017, is one of the new initiatives to decrease this digital gap between urban and rural areas. It supports the setting up of Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces, including libraries, museums, public parks and squares across Europe. For  more information about what is the Wifi4Eu initiative and who is eligible, you can read Euromontana’s article “Wifi4EU Initiative: implement wireless access points in your municipality” here (for Euromontana’s members only)

The first call for projects will be launched on 15 May 2018 and is open to municipalities and entity acting on behalf of municipalities (see the list of eligible entities here).

Registered municipalities will be able to apply for Wifi4EU vouchers (worth 15,000€ each) that will cover the equipment and installation costs of Wi-Fi hotspots. These vouchers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis ensuring a geographical balance across Europe.

€15 million has been set aside for this first call while €120 million has been allocated until 2020 to fund equipment for public free Wi-Fi services in 6,000 to 8,000 municipalities in all Member States plus Iceland and Norway.

Beneficiaries commit to pay for the connectivity (internet subscription) and maintenance of the equipment to offer free and high-quality Wi-Fi connectivity for at least 3 years.

Euromontana encourages its members to register ahead on the web portal and apply as soon as possible to receive a voucher.

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed! We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. He stressed that :1️⃣ mountains are not Europe’s margins, but diverse and complex living territories, and 2️⃣ stronger place-based policies and European cooperation are needed to move from recognition to implementation. Thanks again for the organization, the opportunity, and to all the participants 👏 ...
