Conclusions of the IXth European Mountain Convention

Between the 22nd and 24th October 2014, Bilbao hosted the IX° edition of the European Mountain Convention, an event t organised every two years by Euromontana, the European Association for the Development of Mountain Areas, in different parts of Europe in collaboration with one of their 75 members. The Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government, was the co-organiser of this 2014 edition on mountain products.

As a result a Declaration has been produced to gather the main results and conclusions, as well as the recommendations coming out from the IX European Mountain Convention. In short, in the conclusions, Euromontana gets the commitment to:

  • Explore ways in which the new European policies can contribute to structure sectors and territories around brands and labels valorising mountains.
  • Provide a space for exchange with local mountain action groups so that they can compare and improve their draft local development strategies regarding the issue of territorial marketing and enhancement of mountain product value.
  • Explore the possibility of developing projects that contribute to better achievement of the points mentioned above and particularly in research and innovation, tourism, rural development and territorial cohesion.
  • Prepare the contributions to the Milano World Expo 2015 ‘Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life’ by supporting the position paper on “Promotion of European local food systems.”

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed! We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. He stressed that :1️⃣ mountains are not Europe’s margins, but diverse and complex living territories, and 2️⃣ stronger place-based policies and European cooperation are needed to move from recognition to implementation. Thanks again for the organization, the opportunity, and to all the participants 👏 ...
