Cooperation agreed between Euromontana and the Carpathian Convention

Euromontana is pleased to have endorsed in December 2020 a Memorandum of Understanding with the Carpathian Convention in December 2020. Euromontana and the Carpathian Convention will further collaborate in the future to exchange knowledge and expertise on issues related to agriculture and rural development.

Euromontana is convinced that cooperation among all European mountains is crucial to achieve sustainable development and make mountains attractive by learning from others and discovering innovative initiatives. Adrian-Radu Rey, Vice-President of Euromontana and President of Romontana, welcomed the agreement during the last meeting of the Conference of the Parties in November 2020. He explained that this agreement “will give us the opportunity to further exchanges successful experiences and best practices, but also to exchange wider knowledge and experts and develop joint projects. It will strengthen our already good collaboration to organise conferences and seminars”.

The Carpathian Convention is a sub-regional treaty aiming to foster the sustainable development and the protection of the Carpathian region, signed by seven Carpathian States (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic and Ukraine) in 2003 and entered into force in 2006. The Carpathian Convention is the only multi-level governance mechanism which covers the entire Carpathian region, and it aims at pursuing comprehensive policies and cooperation to protect and sustainably develop the Carpathian mountain region.

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed! We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. He stressed that :1️⃣ mountains are not Europe’s margins, but diverse and complex living territories, and 2️⃣ stronger place-based policies and European cooperation are needed to move from recognition to implementation. Thanks again for the organization, the opportunity, and to all the participants 👏 ...
