Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas: an achievement for the mountains?

The European Commission published its Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas on 30th June 2021. Announced in September 2019 by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the Vision is the new flagship communication to address the different challenges faced by rural areas and set objectives for their development by 2040. Euromontana got involved in the design of the Vision for more than one year to bring the voice of mountain communities.

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed!We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. 📍 We were, together with agricultural, agri-food and institutional stakeholders at the "Rencontres des produits de Montagne" , with a shared aim: to give fresh momentum to the promotion of mountain products in France. Organised by Association ALTITUDE, the event was held as part of the relaunch of the Mountain Product logo in France as a collective and structuring tool for mountain value chains ⛰️ Some key insights: 1️⃣ Mountain products clearly benefit from a positive image, showed the results of a consumer study run and presented by our member CNIEL. Yet, more public supports are needed to enhance the value of mountain dairy production. 2️⃣ Romania was highlighted by the Agenția Națională a Zonei Montane as a good example of uptake of the optional 'Mountain Product' quality term.
