The Lombardy region launches Montagna Futuro – strategies for youth and technology for the development of the Lombardy mountains

On March 14th, 2017,politicians, technicians, researchers, mountain residents, government officials, an Olympic athlete (Deborah Compagnoni), and many more joined together to launch Montagna Futuro. Montagna Futuro is a project of the Lombardy region in Italy that aims to define a strategy to develop and promote the Lombardy mountains. The project will focus on developing strategies for youth and technology for the development of the Lombardy mountains. The project has initial funding of 9 million euros for projects specifically focused on the mountains. The event included talks by Roberto Maroni, president of the Lombardy region, Ugo Parolo, undersecretary of Mountain Politics, Annibale Salsa, anthropologist, and our very own Elisabetta Parravicini, president of ERSAF and vice-president of Euromontana, and Enrico Calvo, director of the services for the territory, mountains, and supply chains in ERSAF. The speakers spoke to the importance of keeping youth in mountain areas, getting them involved in and interested in the administration of the mountains, and providing a high quality of life in the mountains, for example by keeping schools open in remote areas or encouraging local culture, such as music bands, and community, such as through local fire stations. The project will develop an action plan for the Lombardy mountains and provide funding for mountain projects in order to promote locally driven mountain development in Lombardy.
