The revision of Geographical Indication schemes: what will change for agricultural and non-agricultural products?

In May 2020, the European Commission published its Farm to Fork Strategy, aiming at designing a fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food system. Among the measures announced in this Strategy is the Commission’s intention to revise Geographical Indication schemes. 1/3 of GIs in the European Union are produced in mountain areas and these schemes are of particular importance for mountains’ regional value chains.

Based on the discussion of the Civil Dialogue Group ‘Quality and Promotion’ of November 5, 2020, and on DG AGRI’s conference “Strengthening geographical indications” of November 25 and 26, 2020, this article intends to explain the first known elements of the GI reform, including for non-agricultural GIs. Discover the key elements and dates and see how you can get involved in the consultation processes in our article (for members only).
