A new video to explain the Oreka Mendian project!

An informative video of the LIFE Oreka Mendian project is now available. The video provides general information about the project and about the actions that are implemented in the mountain pastures of 15 protected areas of the Spanish Basque country and 8 of the French Basque country.

Oreka Mendian is an EU LIFE project running from 2016 to 2021, which aims to develop a strategy for the conservation and the management of mountain pastures located in Natura 2000 areas in the Basque Country. A member of Euromontana, the HAZI foundation, is directly involved in the project as coordinator, alongside Euromontana.

Today, Euromontana had the pleasure to take part in the journalist training course “Transizione ecologica nelle aree montane: biodiversità, cambiamento climatico e sviluppo sostenibile”, organised by Università della Montagna with the Ordine dei Giornalisti della Lombardia (the Lombardy Association of Journalists 📰)The course, bringing together 65+ participants, focused on how to better understand and report on ecological transition in mountain areas, from biodiversity and climate change to sustainable development ⛰️👉This matters because the way mountain areas are reported shapes the way they are understood and, ultimately, the way they are governed!We were pleased to join our member UNIMONT in this exchange. Prof. Anna Giorgi highlighted the need to change the way mountain areas are perceived, beyond fragility and marginality. Stefano Sala then showed how issues such as depopulation, winter tourism, climate change and public policy require a more nuanced reading of mountain realities 🔍 For Euromontana, Guillaume Corradino brought a European perspective to the discussion. 📍 We were, together with agricultural, agri-food and institutional stakeholders at the "Rencontres des produits de Montagne" , with a shared aim: to give fresh momentum to the promotion of mountain products in France. Organised by Association ALTITUDE, the event was held as part of the relaunch of the Mountain Product logo in France as a collective and structuring tool for mountain value chains ⛰️ Some key insights: 1️⃣ Mountain products clearly benefit from a positive image, showed the results of a consumer study run and presented by our member CNIEL. Yet, more public supports are needed to enhance the value of mountain dairy production. 2️⃣ Romania was highlighted by the Agenția Națională a Zonei Montane as a good example of uptake of the optional 'Mountain Product' quality term.
